Building Communities, Companies and Projects in Weekends

Reasons For Attending

January 20, 2008 | by Andrew Hyde

I am really enjoying using Skribit on the sidebar of the blog (built during SW Atlanta). Someone suggested ‘Reasons for Attending’ as a topic for me to write about, and I think this would be a good chance for a nice concise list.

1. Be a part of your local tech community, help build it and connect people.

2. What did you do last weekend? Experience an amazing energy, it could change your life.

3. Meet brilliant, amazing, motivated people. Find people that you know can work hard, finish projects and work well with an unknown landscape. Find a cofounder.

4. Be a part of something bigger, get excited.

5. When is the last time you had a challenge such as launching a company in 54 hours with 100 or so strangers? When is the last time you saw your company on the front page?

6. Grow as a person and as a professional, see different parts of a company, feel free to join different groups and learn by doing.

7. Learn a ton.

8. Crazy idea + brilliant people + passion + drive + talent = (you have to come to see). It might just be what your city needs.

9. Get some cool swag.

10. Over 1000 have had an amazing experience. You can read about some feedback here.

David Cohen also has a top 10 list on Startup Weekend. You should check that out as well.

If you’re like me, without an entrepreneurial background (or even a business background, after 1.5 decades in the nonprofit world), I can guarantee you will not learn so much in such a concentrated period of time doing anything else. If it doesn’t work for you, you’ve lost a weekend out of your life. But if it does work, you have this amazing experience to draw on, and scores of new contacts who will continue to enrich your life, regardless of the outcome of your SW project.

I can’t wait for Portland, OR! As far as I am concerned, StartUp Weekend is the best idea ever!
