Indianapolis Startup Weekend
May 2, 2008 || by Ray AngelThe crossroads of America has been vying for a Startup Weekend for quite some time now.
Startup Weekends in the Midwest are always fun and amazing because so many talented people will come out not realizing how many other people in the area have the same interests they do and a real community is always formed after the event is over.
I for one know that Indianapolis Startup Weekend will be another HUGE weekend with tickets that will sell out fast because I’ve been talking with the people of the area and every single one of them is excited and can’t wait to get the weekend here.
Mark the calendar because Indianapolis Startup Weekend will be taking place September 12 - 14. Registration for the weekend is open now and as always at our low price of $40 you’ll be getting a fair share of community, fun, food, schwag, and more. You can get registered for the event by clicking here.

RTP Startup Weekend
|| by Ray AngelResearch Triangle Park is strategically located in the state of North Carolina. It is at the center of the dynamic Research Triangle Region. RTP is the largest and longest continually operating research park in the United States, encompassing 7,000 acres. With more than 160 companies occupying 24.5 million square feet of developed space, RTP is globally renowned as a center of innovation. It boasts one of the largest concentrations of high-technology workers in the country.
It is for this reason that the Research Triangle Park Startup Weekend is sure to be one filled with innovative and forward thinking ideas from a group of people with way bigger brains then me.
Taking place July 11 - 13 this will be an amazing weekend at the low price of only $40. As always each attendee will get a fair share of scwag, learning, food, entertainment, networking, and fun for the low price.
Seeing how fast RTP moved up on the City Vote this is another city where we will most likely meet capacity rather quickly so you will want to get registered as soon as possible.

Columbus Startup Weekend
May 1, 2008 || by Ray AngelThe momentum of the group in Columbus has been in one word amazing.
The group of people working behind the scenes to make a Columbus weekend happen has been a great one. In just a mere matter of days we’ve went from just talking about making the weekend happen to having a location selected, some ideas already coming in, and a large number of people saying they want to attend.
I’m proud to announce today Startup Weekend Columbus will be taking place July 18-20th at the amazing Tech Columbus facility.
The level of enthusiasm in Columbus and the surrounding area has been overwhelming and the bloggers of the area have been talking about the real possibility of Columbus Startup Weekend for the past several weeks. People in the area even coordinated an effort to get votes out for the city and it worked.
I’ve never seen a city rise so fast in a mere matter of hours and the emails begin coming in about what it will take to get the city a Startup Weekend like this before.
The obvious drive and talent of those in the area means that this weekend will most certainly be a successful one.
The fact that the demand for this weekend was so high means that tickets will be selling very fast and that if you want to reserve your spot you’ll need to head over here and register fast. For the low price of $40 you’ll get your fair share of fun, learning, food, free schwag, and networking for an amazing price.

The Future of Startup Weekend
April 19, 2008 || by Ray AngelOne question on the minds of many is “What will the future of Startup Weekend look like?”.
The answer is quite simple…. VERY EXCITING.
Startup Weekend is a truly amazing thing. The community it builds can’t be beat, the ideas that come out of it are amazing, and the entire concept is truly revolutionary.
When I found out about coming on board I was ecstatic. Next my mind started filling with a plethora of new ideas and I literally told Andrew I had to stop doing what I was doing and run to my whiteboard and start putting them down.
As I type this I look up at that whiteboard and I see a large mix of ideas and I can feel a sense of enthusiasm that I don’t think I could ever get with another project.
I’ve already plotted out a large list of places that I want to visit, and a large list of people I want to meet. The City Vote section of our website is one of the most powerful aspects and enables you fine people to vote directly on the cities that you’d like to see Startup Weekend at. I’d HIGHLY encourage you to take a look at the amazing selection of cities that are up for voting and if you see one you’d be interested in attending vote for it. If you have a new suggestion that isn’t up for voting please email me directly at ray@startupweekend.com and I’ll get it up for votes.
Speaking of emailing me directly I’d love to hear what you are thinking about Startup Weekend. I will always reply to your messages and am very open to new ideas, concepts, and even just a good chat at any time. Again the email address is ray@startupweekend.com.
I’m going to be streamlining the process of information dissemination coming out of our weekends so that those of you startup enthusiasts and Startup Weekend fans can get a nearly first-person experience online if you can’t make it to a particular Startup Weekend. I’ll be posting more information on the exact details over the upcoming weeks but I promise you that it’ll be rockin’.
Startup Weekend is an amazing event for building community, finding co-founders and finding a challenge for yourself. The new format has proven itself to be a powerful change and I have every intention on continuing the success that we found it had at Boulder this year. The idea of allowing multiple groups, projects, and even companies is a powerful new format. Letting people decide at the event what they are doing, who they are doing it with, and how they will do it truly allows for some amazing new things to come out of the weekend.
To that end a complete overhaul of the Startup Weekend Founders Agreement is underway. No longer are weekends constrained to giving up equity to Startup Weekend nor are they detained on how they will divide equity up on companies and projects to whom they want… the group members will be able to determine the solution that will work best for them.
This is truly a powerful change because it allows the groups to determine how they want to go about forming a company, organization, or group. We are simply enabling them a place to finally work on new ideas, concepts, improve previous ideas, and gain insight on what startup life entails. I’ll explain these changes in the near future on an upcoming post.
Also I am proud to announce we have launched a new web based community for people from previous weekends, current weekends, and future weekends to meet, speak, plan and more. I’m really excited about this because it will finally give like-minded people a place to speak, and it will help make the planning and execution of the weekends easier for those involved. Not to mention how it’ll be a great direct line for me to get in touch with people who have ideas on where Startup Weekend should be going. If you have ideas for categories you’d like to see added please suggest them on the new community.
I’ve got plenty of ideas where we can take Startup Weekend and with the suggestions of the community we hope to build out even more.

Upcoming Weekends
April 10, 2008 || by Ray AngelSo we’ve got lots in store for Startup Weekend and I wanted to fill everyone in on what they should be expecting and some of the details of the upcoming events.
San Antonio Startup Weekend will be around the corner before you know it and I’m very excited! Taking place May 16th-18th at the San Antonio Technology Center this one is going to be a BLAST. I’ve been talking with several talented people in San Antonio including Jennifer Navarrete and Celeste Diaz Ferraro about all of the cool things that will be happening and they have helped get the ball rolling like you wouldn’t believe.
This Startup Weekend takes place at an awesome facility in that we will have the necessities such as Internet access and some fun entertainment, a place to relax, a place for fun and games and much more.
May 16th is quickly approaching and as always our space is limited so if you haven’t reserved your spot please consider doing so as quickly as possible. At $40 for three days filled with learning, community building, fun, schwag, food, drinks and more you can’t get a better deal.
We’ve got the facilities Friday at 6pm - 10pm, Saturday 9am - midnight, Sunday 9am - 9pm and can’t wait to see you at the event!
Also for those of you in the Portland area or attending the WebVisions event we’ve got another weekend coming up that will be of interest.
Portland Startup Weekend will be kicking off at the end of the amazing WebVisions event which will be the place to be for anyone who consider themselves a technology enthusiast on Thursday and Friday.
Read more up on the WebVisions event here and plan on sticking around Portland because Portland Startup Weekend gets kicked off after the WebVisions event and the ending keynote by Google’s own Jeffrey Veen. Be sure to hurry and register for $40 for Portland Startup Weekend. Spots are being reserved fast and you will want to attend.
In the pipe as well is the Memphis Startup Weekend which will be taking place May 30th - June 1st. I’m really excited for this one as well because Harry Brown and the guys in Memphis are doing an AMAZING job of getting the community around the idea of LaunchMemphis. This is really cool because they’ve got the entire community buzzing about technology and startups for six weeks with Startup Weekend being the climax of the event. Again at only $40 you can’t find a three day event with more food, fun, and scwag for a better price. Head on over here and get registered for the event and if you are in the Memphis area be sure to read up on LaunchMemphis and the other great events these guys have planned for the area.
We’ve got even more great weekends coming soon and I’ll be keeping you all up-to-date on the latest here on the website so stay tuned.

It Only Took One
April 4, 2008 || by Ray AngelI recently attended Startup Weekend in Bloomington, Indiana and was attending Boulder 2 in spirit because of various meetings that kept me away but it only took one Startup Weekend experience to get me hooked.
So hooked in fact that I’m taking on the position of Startup Weekend CEO.
Startup Weekend recruits a highly motivated group of developers, business managers, startup enthusiasts, marketing gurus, graphic artists and more to a 54 hour event that builds communities, companies and projects.
Founded in 2007 by Andrew Hyde, the weekend is a concept of a conference focusing on learning by creating. It is known for its quick decisions, ‘out of the box’ thinking, unique facilitation technique and letting the founders show what they can do. The program has already met with success in Boulder, Toronto, New York, Hamburg, Houston, West Lafayette, Boston, DC and more.
At the most recent Boulder II Startup Weekend Andrew tried successfully to launch a new format that involves even more launches per weekend, more dedicated teams, recruiting by already established companies, and even no requirement to incorporate a company at the end of the weekend.
The new format has been a stunning success and Andrew has once again proven his forward thinking will keep Startup Weekend ahead of the curve.
I promise that I’ll bring that same forward thinking, drive for success and determination to each and every Startup Weekend that we organize and evolve as the new CEO of Startup Weekend.
The format Startup Weekend is using works… and I’m not going to change that. The low price point works… and I’m not going to change that any time soon.
I’m merely going to build on the MASSIVE level of success that Andrew has had with Startup Weekend and be working WITH Andrew to continue the trend of Startup Weekend success.
Andrew isn’t going anywhere. He is merely rolling back his role as he pursues some new projects and ideas that I’m sure because of his revolutionary nature will be hearing about soon!
Startup Weekend is a unique and ever evolving idea and I hope that you will join me for the ride with even more upcoming weekends scheduled in great cities such as San Antonio, Portland, Memphis, Ann Arbor and more.
I also hope that you’ll join me in celebrating the great job Andrew is doing and offer him a much deserved congratulations on being a revolutionary startup enthusiast who has proved time and time again his ability to create, launch, manage and grow successful new ideas.
Thanks for the kind words via comments, tweets, and emails. I greatly appreciate it.
I will be posting soon about the future of Startup Weekend a plethora of new weekends that I can’t wait to tell you about and much, much more!
Keep Rockin!

Startups dot AllTop dot com
April 3, 2008 || by Andrew HydeI was checking out AllTop.com today (a project of Guy Kawasaki and Electric Pulp, both are great and were at SXSW this year).
Looks like Startup Weekend made the cut.
Perhaps this is a sign that Startup Weekend is becoming more about startup culture than just some random event.
I think the gap is being bridged with articles just about the weekends and the happenings behind the lives of the people that make it happen.
Check out the startup section on alltop to see some other really great startup blogs (including Learn to Duck, a favorite of mine and Startup Weekend favorite Techstars).

New Leadership at Startup Weekend
|| by Andrew HydeEveryone, welcome Ray Angel, the new ‘guy behind Startup Weekend.’
I met Ray at the Bloomington Startup Weekend, where he impressed me and quite a few colleges with his energy and love of startup culture. He will now take the lead on Startup Weekend.
You can read his blog here, his twitter here and see his oh so trendy hipster mugshot on the right.
Expect a slew of weekend announcements in the next few weeks.
I will take a step back and advise when needed. It has been an amazing ride, but Startup Weekend was never my true passion, it was an idea that I never expected to blow up and take me to the places it did. I have now met over 2200 early stage startup junkies over the last 16 startup weekends.
Here is to many more life changing weekends!
Everyone, welcome Ray in the comments.
