Building Communities, Companies and Projects in Weekends

Introductions and San Antonio Recap

May 21, 2008 | by Clayton Stobbs

In light of recent events I was called upon by Andrew to come on board with Startup Weekend and act as “interim CEO” until things can get sorted out and some long term strategic plans can be set. Although “interim CEO” sounds pretty neat, I think “Assistant to the Regional Manager” is more fitting and might better suit the position (be warned, a great deal of Arrested Development and Office may seep into my posting). In any case, I am Clayton Stobbs and will be helping with the day to day continuing operations of Startup Weekend as well as some longer term planning for the next few months. I hope I can be of some help for the next while and you can email at clayton [at] startupweekend dot com to get in touch.  If you were waiting for a response from Ray, and have not gotten one yet, please email me and I will help you out.

Now to more pressing matters. As you might have noticed, Startup Weekend San Antonio was a resounding success and some very interesting developments came out of the passionate and exited SA community. Once again, we must thank Jennifer Navarrete and Erica O’Grady for their organizing and facilitating prowess.

Several developments came out of this weekend with the first being idre.am, a collection of dreams and interpretations from all over the internet. The app current supports twitter (just use @idreamed) but has plans to integrate Facebook and MySpace soon enough.

In other developments ForceXchange also managed to put together a live site and “launch” a very cool service. ForceXchange is a one-stop platform that allows former service members and vendors to sell new or used non-standard issue gear. Buyers can purchase new gear from vendors or used gear from other site members.

Finally, RentEscapes also managed to have a successful weekend with plans to more forward in the near future. Their ambition and drive to achieve some very large goals made their task a more long term venture that will be interesting to follow as it develops.

I think Jennifer managed to summarize the whole event and purpose of these events in stating, “Overall, Startup Weekend San Antonio was a complete success. We went from a room full of strangers to company founders over the course of a weekend.” Feel free to check out the San Antonio Startup Weekend blog and follow the progression of their work. We hope to hear more in the future and expect great things from these teams!
