Startup The Show: #5 Conversation
Posted by Andrew Hyde
So today was the day of the great day for conversations on the web, spurred by one single post, and the aftermath has been called “The great Jeremiah Owyang Twitter expansion of 2007.” In the post, titles so boldly “Some Conversations have shifted to Twitter” Jeremiah describes who he thinks twitter is for and not.
If you’re in the tech industry, and in marketing, you should be paying attention to what’s happening on twitter. There’s even search tools that can help you find discussions and memes. Also, if you’re trying to reach early adopters, these are tools for you. This really reminds me of the the whole blogging industry in 2005, it’s the same type of pros and cons –it’s just much smaller now. If you don’t meet these criterion, then it may not be for you, always remember to find the audience you’re trying to reach first.
For episode #5 Rana and Andrew (or as this discussion goes, @ranajune and @andrewhyde) discuss what it means to form the conversation, how it affects startups and Twitter best practices. Oh the joys of an entire podcast dedicated to the 140 character update.

Love the podcast! What is your secret behind the great audio quality? Totally thought it was done in person. My guess is some kind of VOIP like skype but would love the details.
Thanks

@Danny we both just use the built in mic for the MacBook (pro) and GarageBand, both recording our separate tracks, and do a video chat with Skype.
Glad you like it!

Right on in railing against tweetspam, turned notifications off on Guy Kawasaki for that exact reason. His reason for the spam? “Twitter is the 4th largest referral of traffic to truemors.”
It’s a fine line though, the people I’ve seen that really benefit, pick their battles. One or two links a week seems to be the sweet spot. Truthfully, I’m more likely to share a link over twitter, because it’s passive (as opposed to email) which is why we are seeing a lot of people sharing through twitter and a lot of traffic coming from twitter.
I think twitter works well for that “what is interesting to me right now” quick thought. It is interesting in that niche, and the moment someone’s noise to signal ratio drops low, you can un-follow them.
Also, according to a friend who’s a little more e-famous then I am has notified me that the right ratio is 4:1 (for every 4 people that follow you, you should follow 1 of them). Apparently that makes you look important on the interwebs.
See you guys next weekend, looking forward to meeting you Rana.
Cheers,
Tyler

Andrew,
Thanks for the link - it’s been a great experience finding so many people to follow, adding to the conversation over on Twitter. It was a great way to find interesting and intelligent people quickly and in abundance. I don’t even think Jeremiah knew what was going to happen when he posted Tuesday morning.
Regards,
Rick
