Portland Startup Weekend

Portland Oregon Startup WeekendYou ready?

Startup Weekend is proud to announce that the Portland Startup Weekend will be held May 23-25 2008. This is Memorial day weekend, so plan accordingly. Surprisingly, this date worked the best when a sample from the cityvote project was polled. It will be great to have a nice northwestern spring day on Monday to enjoy as a holiday (which is a huge plus). This will be the 17th Startup Weekend to take place across the globe.

Please blog, twitter, IM and tell your friends about the weekend (and feel free to use this logo and link to this post). Oregon is my home state and I can’t wait to get back.

A nice intimate set will be provided by the great folks at SMtvMusic.com. We already have quite a few surprises planned for the first Startup Weekend in Oregon.

So, you want to get involved? Contact cities@startupweekend.com if you would like to help plan the event.

So what can you do?

Tickets for Startup Weekend Portland will be sold here for $40. This is really a RSVP cost, and you will receive your fair share of food, swag and memories. If you or your company is interested in sponsoring a meal, shirts or massive amounts of caffeine, email sponsor@startupweekend.com.

  14. I’m not sure where to ask these general questions about Startup Weekend. Since I’m signed up for Portland, and I haven’t found answers elsewhere, I’ll ask here:

    * How are teams determined? If we are attending with a buddy, can we be sure to work together? How many members per team?
    * Do we get matched up with members of similar backgrounds or taste in tools (e.g., vim, mercurial, ubuntu, python, django)? Will wearing my vim-reference shirt put me in the right place? :-) * Are we pair-programming, or large-group, or all individually merging into a shared repository?
    * Where do project ideas come from? Can we submit some (or choose) ahead of time?
    * What technologies will we be using? Free to choose on group-by-group basis?
    * What is the hosting plan? Should we have a host ready to go before we get started? What about domain name? Should we plan to spend another $50 on these?
    * Any prep can/should do?
    * What should we bring? A pillow, laptop, books, etc?
    * Are we working 54 hrs straight through, or do we go home to sleep?

    @Micah hope these answer your questions:

    Pitch your idea, and see if others want to join you or you want to join others

    * Do we get matched up with members of similar backgrounds or taste in tools (e.g., vim, mercurial, ubuntu, python, django)? Will wearing my vim-reference shirt put me in the right place? :-)
    You can choose to be in any group.

    * Are we pair-programming, or large-group, or all individually merging into a shared repository?

    Up to you.

    * Where do project ideas come from? Can we submit some (or choose) ahead of time?

    Every time a weekend has had a strong ‘pick the idea before the weekend’ something the day of always trumps it. A mystery to me, but we stopped doing it. Come with some ideas, pitch them, let them evolve.

    * What technologies will we be using? Free to choose on group-by-group basis?

    Free to choose (see a trend in my answers here?)

    * What is the hosting plan? Should we have a host ready to go before we get started? What about domain name? Should we plan to spend another $50 on these?

    Generally your group fee covers costs like this among other things (if there is 50 project, maybe not, but in general it is covered)

    * Any prep can/should do?

    Make sure your friends who need to be there are there.

    * What should we bring? A pillow, laptop, books, etc?

    Laptop.

    * Are we working 54 hrs straight through, or do we go home to sleep?

    Go home and sleep.
